Barbara Chandler writes:
"My first exhibition, entitled Moments, was in 1987 at the Heifer Gallery in Highgate, and was masterminded by the wonderful Christian du Plessis, a good friend. Usually he showed fine art, from a carefully-selected band of painters, sculptors and artist-craftsmen. One day, when he came to supper, I asked him if he would like to "look at my photos." People then (except for my very close family) did not know that for many years I had been taking my particular type of largely black-and-white photographs. (My work in colour came much later, when I started working in a variety of film types).
"Now, I had been brave enough to have many of them hand-printed and considerably enlarged. "Oh, I don't DO photos," said Christian, off-handedly. "I wasn't thinking of you DOING anything," I said. "I just thought you might like to see what I have been up to for sometime now." I fished out the large cardboard box that lived under my bed, as that was the only place I could be sure that it would stay properly flat.
"Christian was kind enough to look through the pictures carefully. 'Actually, I'd like to do your photographs,' he said. My show, Moments, was the result, and I was encouraged and emboldened.
"I did not have any formal training. I cannot say that I was completely self-taught, as so many professional photographer friends, and endless experts in camera and processing shops, shared their knowledge with me along the way. But it was largely a case of try, try and try again, learning to push the camera and different types of film to their limits. And I had endless chance to practice, and I illustrated a shopping guide I wrote for Ideal Home magazine for 20 years.
"I also had a stall at Portobello Road market in West London for several years, laying out my cards and prints every Saturday as a one-day show.
" Here are some notes on the exhibitions I have held following on from Moments, and of the collections of photographs on which I am currently working. You won't see all my work, as it is taking a long time to scan all the early negatives onto discs for electronic reproduction. Bit it is lovely to share with you what I do have available so far, and I hope that you enjoy looking at these photographs taken in so many diverse places."
Please do contact Barbara if you would like to buy prints of any particular images. Many are available as cards - please click on the tabs on the left.

Visions of Poland
Barbara Chandler writes:
This series of shows was curated by Christian du Plessis of the Heifer Gallery and was held at the Posk Gallery in the Polish Centre in Hammersmith, West London, in 1992, 1993, and 1994. It captures the mood, landscape and people of Poland in the1980s and early 1990s, and was the result of many trips to Poland, to stay with a friend, who had become close during his visit(s) to Britain. I was welcomed in particular by his sister and mother."
Visions of Poland was also shown in Warsaw, in 1992, at the prestigious Stara Kordegarda Gallery at the Palace on the Lake in Lazienki Park. It was featured on Polish television, and received good press coverage in Britain.
TO SEE IMAGES, please click on Visions of Poland, right. Barbara has also included images taken on later visits to Poland, and therefore not in the original show. She will add to these images when more of the earlier negatives are put onto disc.

Poles Apart
This exhibition was part of the Visions of Poland series, and was at the Posk Gallery (see above) in 1994. It paired photographs taken in London and Warsaw. It has been difficult to reconstruct this for the website.
Street Music
Barbara Chandler's Street Music was show in the crush bar of London's old Covent Garden Opera House in 1995. London's street musicians were photographed all over the capital as they played and sang. Barbara Chandler even went to court in 1993 to champion the right of buskers to play in the London Underground (metro/subway), on the invitation of Julian who played the trumpet in a cat suit. Playing on the London Underground has now been legalised. TO SEE IMAGES, click on Street Music, right

Barbara Chandler's London
Barbara Chandler's London was at the West Soho Gallery in 1997, and featured a quirky view of life in the capital: its people and its buildings. Many of these images are now in LOVE LONDON, on show in Habitat on Regent Street during September, 2008. Barbara has included London images taken at a later date.

The Hidden Heart of Hackney
Pictures of Hackney people and places were shown in Broadway Market in 1999/2000.
Barbara had photographed a little heart graffitted onto a corrugated door in Hackney, whilst visiting the organisers of the Hidden Art of Hackney, who then kindly made available an empty shop for her show. The premises were lined out with pictures of local people and places. If you found an image of yourself, you got it free. Barbara has included London images taken at a later date.
